NOTES ON GENOCIDE
Massacre has been occurring as a violent expression of one people against another for as long as different sets of people have had serious differences of opinion. Precisely because they are different sets of people and have developed different ways of approaching and solving problems, they have difficulty in having a “meeting of the minds.” If such sets of people are separated by a reasonable allocation of earthly space, then conflict is greatly lessened. Ritual gestures of goodwill in the form of annual exchange of produce, herd animals, etc., may act to create a good neighbor relationship. Emergency assistance under conditions of duress at the “hand” of “Mother Nature” may further aid the neighborly accord, even though the general modes of thinking between the neighbors remain distinct and incompatable.
Unfortunately, the above scenario is not really to be expected. It’s a sad practical truth that people tend to behave badly, exhibiting such foibles as envy, greed, etc. Inequality between neighbors creates pressures on the leadership of the “poor neighbor,” and that pressure tends to resolve itself in the form of attack and plunder of the “better off” neighbor. The “better off” neighbor need not be quilty of any willful harm done to the “poor neighbor.” The appearance of clear inequalities will be ascribed to the use of “evil forces.” How else? ask the leadership of the poor neighbor, Can they achieve so much? Evil Spirits have helped them! Enraged, the poorer neighbors invade the lands of the richer to destroy the Temples of Evil which have been the unfair and unrighteous source of economic disparity. They massacre the evil neighbors and help themselves to the portable wealth of that neighbor.
There are two primary means of gaining wealth: produce it or steal it. Once a neighbor has gone on the “war path” and succeeded beyond its rulers wildest dreams, that society tends to continue that road to wealth. A new consciousness has been realised and internalized into an expression of that society’s culture. It will be expressed repeatedly in the future. Since this easy aggrandizement of useful materials, food produce, herds, weapons of war, and the like, increases the victorious neighbor’s sense of its virtue and correctness of vision, the members of that society will feel more able to have large families. The society’s leaders will approvingly eye each male as an increase in that society’s military might. At this stage, woe to any neighbors within striking distance.
Further, a wealthier society lends itself to sustaining an educational & religious establishment whose primary initial duty will be to elaborate on that society’s theology and to promote that society’s culture, particularly relative to others. The latter will on occasion be utilized to provide a pretext to conquer and massacre the benighted society of a neighbor. The conquered neighbor will be improved by the conqueror’s culture. The successful raids on neighbors proves culturally addictive.
There are two predictable results of this “poor” neighbor’s success story. The periodic raids upon a given neighbor will lead to a permanent suppression of such a neighbor as a conquered and tribute-paying one. If the conquered society is granted a general autonomy conditioned upon the fullfillment of certain obligations (feudal system), then the conquered society may be a useful servant-ally.
The second certainty which will result is the lessening of the quality of the males within the conquering society relative to those at the beginning period. Over time the conquering society will suffer many male deaths in battle and by means of disease encountered in distant lands. Further, disease may be brought back into the heart of the conquering society, resulting in even more deaths. The greater genetic lines may fall as easily as the lesser within this society, thus doing great injury to the core strength of that society. The growing loss amongst the “best and brightest” signals a cresting of the conquering society.
The use of slaves from among the conquered neighbors is a process which has its dangers. To a limited extent and especially when large numbers of the more virile members of the society are off to war, the use of slaves may keep the domestic machinery of a society functioning in a reasonably smooth way. The more distinctly different the slaves are from the genetic stock of the ruling society, the more problematic the association. However, an unwise increase of slaves to do most labor will make that society vulnerable, as it become dependent. No society is both strong and dependent. The ratio of those two elements will decide the longevity of the society.
When a society takes the sword to improve itself, ultimately it will destroy itself. Both mercenaries and slaves will be increasingly accepted as “equal members of society,” as that society becomes more and more dependent upon them. This will mean that they will be increasingly brought into accepted membership, entering into marriages and blending into the original society’s bedrock stock. A further danger is the wealth which accummulates from conquered people as spoils and as tribute. The children will tend toward hedonism, rather than to the “war-like” idioms of the society’s founders. The vicissitudes of combat may seem to be avoidable by paying mercenaries. By this time the educational and artistic sections of the society will have gained much headway. “New ideas” are the rage. The old ways are held in contempt. The young have begun to show undue interest in song, dance, poetry, and prose of vain and shallow nature. Lewdness rather than virtue are themes for poets and songwriters.
Warlike mercenaries and visitors will gaze upon such youth with contempt. The days approach when a new massacre will be at hand. As the Lord King observed: Those who live by the sword, die by the sword.
Most fundamental to the Earthly design is this: Diversity within a Society is the preamble to Genocide.
